This 193 km2 island, the size of Liechtenstein, anchored off the coast of Venezuela, in Aruba, originally bore the uninviting nickname of “Isla inutila”, that is to say the useless island. Because they were disappointed at not having discovered gold, Spanish explorers gave it this name in the early 16th century. They hadn't looked hard enough, since the Dutch, who took control of the region a century later, discovered nuggets there, ushering in a period of immense wealth.
The mines are no longer exploited, and tourism is now Aruba's main industry. Although it is still part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, this independent province offers considerable advantages, starting with its vast expanses of opaline sand bordered by a blue sea. It enjoys the most sunshine of all the Caribbean islands; the temperature is constantly above 30°C and there is only one month of rain per year.
