Due to its physical location, Barbados stands out a bit from the Caribbean landscape. Displaced from the West Indian arc, it is not volcanic but limestone and is beaten by the strong waves of the Atlantic on its eastern shore. It seemed to be the ideal place for sugar cane production since it was flat or almost flat. Its prosperity and identity were created by slavery and the trade in this white gold.
The island was considered “the richest acre of land in the world” at the end of the 17th century. This windfall made it possible to build beautiful planters' houses. There are several tropical gardens, although only a small percentage of them are accessible to the general public. Historically, Barbados has been the most British of all.
However, the island now appears to be rocking. National Heroes Square replaced the eponymous Trafalgar Square. The Nelson statue there now faces Broad Avenue in the opposite direction from where it previously faced. Should Barbados become a republic or remain a member of the Commonwealth? Everyone is asking the question. It must give itself a new image, more festive and more Caribbean. The one we encounter at beach barbecues, fish fry parties and rum shops where we play hysterical games of dominoes. Our favorite Barbados.
